Mutable Tactics closes $2.1 million pre‑seed round to advance coordinated autonomy for defence drones

Mutable Tactics has raised $2.1m in pre‑seed funding to accelerate development of AI software that enables unmanned systems to operate as coordinated teams, even when communications are degraded or denied.

The round was led by Seraphim Space, with participation from NSSIF, Koro, Entrepreneurs First and Transpose.

Defence forces are deploying increasing numbers of unmanned systems, but most still rely on one operator per drone, a model that struggles to scale in contested environments. Mutable Tactics, a UK company, is developing an AI‑powered decision layer that translates a commander’s intent into locally executable actions, allowing mixed fleets of drones to coordinate, adapt and continue operating when connectivity is unreliable.

The approach maintains meaningful human control while enabling one operator to supervise multiple systems, removing the human bottleneck and improving resilience in complex operational settings.

Founded in 2024 by former British Army officer Colin MacLeod and robotics AI specialist Enrique Muñoz de Cote, the company is focused on building autonomy that performs predictably under real‑world pressures, including degraded communications and rapidly changing conditions.

The funding will expand the engineering team in Cambridge and support development and validation of the technology with two European governments, alongside integration work with unmanned‑system partners and preparation for live demonstrations.

We are pleased to support Mutable Tactics as it develops dual‑use autonomy technologies that strengthen defence capability and improve the resilience of unmanned systems in contested environments.

In NSSIF, we have a partner that deeply understands the realities of the mission. With their support, we’re building robust, explainable autonomy that performs even when communications are denied - strengthening the UK and our allies.
